Catalonia displayed its enormous cultural and historical personality when in 1992 Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games.

Nowadays Catalonia is the Spanish community with the most European flavour and a high degree of development in infrastructure and quality of life.

Duration of travel: 6 days / 6 nights

Days 1 and 2

Barcelona, a city with Phoenician, Roman and Celtiberian precedents, was founded by Amilcar Barca in the year 218 BC. Later, it was conquered by the Moors and then freed by Ludovico Pío. Today it’s a cosmopolitan city with extraordinary artistic, cultural and architectural appeal. We’ll visit the Miró Foundation, a contemporary art gallery; Espai Gaudí, one of the most exemplary buildings of the brilliant artist; the 8th century Basilica of la Merced with the Virgin of la Merced, the patron saint of the city; the 4th century church of Santa Maria del Mar located in Barcelona’s medieval Gothic Quarter; the Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudí’s unfinished creation; the Picasso Museum, and many more. We’ll also climb to the Monastery of Montserrat. We won’t miss a visit to the capital of the cava, where we’ll taste the delicious regional cuisine in a wine cellar.

Day 3

After our two day stay in Barcelona, we’ll head north along the coast road to contemplate Tossa de Mar and visit La Bisbal with its antique shops and pottery. We’ll continue our journey through the beautiful medieval villages of the Empordà, to finally reach the typical masía turned into a hotel where we’ll spend our third and fourth nights.

 

Day 4

On our fourth day, we’ll visit Pals to continue travelling through the Alt Empordà until we reach the site where the first Romans disembarked on the Iberian Peninsula, Ampurias with its Greek and Roman ruins. After having lunch in the restaurant considered the nativity and cathedral of Catalan cuisine, we’ll first visit Figueres with its Dalí Museum and continue towards the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodas.

Day 5

Today we’ll cross Girona to enter the mountainous Catalonia region, visiting Besalú, a medieval town with its emblematic fortified bridge, Olot, the 9th. Century Benedictine monastery of Ripoll, Sant Joan de les Abadesses... to finally reach Camprodón where we’ll rest from our long day.

Day 6

Travelling between mountains, our first destination will be the medieval town of Puigcerdá, and later we’ll explore the historic La Seu de Urgell, where the traveller will decide if he would like to visit Andorra, a small country famous for its free port and great shopping. We’ll reach Barcelona in the afternoon and that night enjoy a delicious farewell dinner.
